How do I even start? This book, so far is in my top five books of 2023. Elissa Sussman is such a wonderful author and I'm so excited to read more by this author. All the characters in 'Funny You Should Ask,' are wonderful and complex in their way (except for Jeremy, who sucks so badly). I loved the idea of having this book go back and forth from then and now, seeing how both Chani and Gabe have grown in these 10 years and how they both impacted each other in the small time they spent together. It's wonderfully balanced.
Personally, my favorite character would be Ollie Matthias. He is funny and charming and in my eyes, had some of the best moments and lines in this book. I would devour a book with just this side character!
Elissa's writing is so fun and she has such a great voice in this book. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much as this book I bought solely on its cover (I know, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but look at it, it's so fun!) I'm looking forward to reading more of her work in the future. I do want to say, if I ever see Elissa Sussman out in the wild, I would have to say thank you for writing this book. I couldn't stop reading it and I almost cried at many parts.
Gabe Parker is complex, but some may not see that. Chani Horowitz is truly talented, but others only see her as that *one* reporter. This book is so fun. I can't get over it. I will be rereading this for sure.
*Also side note, I definitely get Henry Cavil vibes from Gabe Parker, so if this ever has a live adaptation, that is who I think should play Gabe*
